Deutsches Weinlesefest Neustadt

Autumn Fairs and Wine Festivals in cities and villages all over the country dominate German event calendars in September and October. Oktoberfest is only one of them though likely the best known.

If you are more into wine than beer there are countless wine festivals to visit in Germany’s wine growing regions. Take for example the

Deutsches Weinlesefest Neustadt on the German Wine Road of  thePalatinate.

The Deutsches Weinlesefest Neustadt lasts 12 days, from October 2 – 14 in 2013. It is a highlight of the wine festival season in the Palatinate, the world’s largest Riesling growing region and Germany’s second largest wine growing region.

A special event at the Deutsches Weinlesefest Neustadt is the Festive Vintner’s Parade on October 13, the biggest parade of its kind in Germany, with a tradition going back to 1909.

Legendary is the traditional annual Great Palatinate Wine Tasting, the “Große Pfalzweinprobe”, of the Wine Brotherhood of the Palatinate, held on October 12.

It is also here at the Deutsches Weinlesefest that one can attend the coronation of the Palatinate’s Wine Queen. And if you have ever wanted to behold the world’s biggest wine barrel, well here you can.

Unofficially, the festivities begin in the wine producing village of Heiselscher on September 27 with offerings of culinary specialties and wines from the Palatinate region.
